A Place to Call Home

Suddenly, they were navigating the responsibilities of raising children ranging in age from 8 to 16, while making sure they had everything they needed to feel safe and secure.
The family was connected with DePelchin through the children’s school three years ago. Since then, DePelchin has become an important part of their support system — helping with rent, clothing and school supplies, connecting the family with resources and offering assistance along the way.
For Reina, one of the most meaningful changes has been seeing her grandchildren feel secure in their new home.
“They feel safe knowing they have a home and where to sleep,” she says.
On rainy mornings, their grandfather walks them to the school bus stop with an umbrella. It’s this kind of loving care that explains why Reina says, “the kids are growing secure and supported.”
And they are thriving. They love to learn, are excelling in class and receive awards for their accomplishments.
Some of the family’s happiest moments come during the holidays, when everyone gathers around the tree to open gifts provided by DePelchin. Reina says the children look forward to those moments every year.
“[You] have no idea of the smiles on the kids’ faces,” she says. “I don’t know how to explain the joy on their faces.”
For Reina, DePelchin has helped her family find stability, create joyful memories and give her grandchildren something every child deserves: a safe place to call home.
